The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah,
“When you act as midwives to the Hebrew women, and see them on the birthstool, if it is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, she shall live.”
But the midwives feared God; they did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but they let the boys live.
So the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this, and allowed the boys to live?”
The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.”
So God dealt well with the midwives; and the people multiplied and became very strong.
And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families.
Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, “Every boy that is born to the Hebrews you shall throw into the Nile, but you shall let every girl live.”
Now a man from the house of Levi went and married a Levite woman.
The woman conceived and bore a son; and when she saw that he was a fine baby, she hid him three months.
When she could hide him no longer she got a papyrus basket for him, and plastered it with bitumen and pitch; she put the child in it and placed it among the reeds on the bank of the river.
His sister stood at a distance, to see what would happen to him.
The daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her attendants walked beside the river. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her maid to bring it.
When she opened it, she saw the child. He was crying, and she took pity on him. “This must be one of the Hebrews’ children,” she said.
Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?”
Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Yes.” So the girl went and called the child’s mother.
Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child and nurse it for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed it.
When the child grew up, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and she took him as her son. She named him Moses, “because,” she said, “I drew him out of the water.”
INTRO:
Freedom.....
......usually when we find ourselves in an oppressive scenario of experience it is because there is a breakdown somewhere in relationships.
(slight pause)
Because.....
.....I don’t believe that it is possible for someone to oppress a person that they love!
(pause)
You either stop loving.........
...or you begin hating.
Barrel :
Last week I almost preached on the older brother in the parable about the prodigal son.
......and I wanted to point out this very exact thing.
....because even in the closest dynamics of relationship
If anyone forgets why they are in relationship............oppression is possible!
........and people start tripping!
(pause)
This is exactly what's going on in todays text....
...........because verse eight of this chapter says,
“Now a new king came to power in Egypt that did NOT know Joseph!”
(pause)
And so............
..........everything that Joseph did and invested to bless Egypt, and the agreement to love Israel based on Joseph's actions are completely forgotten.
What do you do when you what you helped save is now trying to kill you?
What do you do when you what you helped save is now trying to kill you?…
(Because Joseph……was the game changer for Egypt and Israel during the famine.)
But its funny how people forget how good you been to them……
(pause and expound)
And as horrific as it is to have to endure this oppressive scenario.........
Israel is finding out that,
- God is aware of oppressors and those who are oppressed.........even when those who are oppressed are unaware of Gods activities!
(pause)
There's no way we could no what God is up to.........especially in times of crisis.
........but what makes it bearable is when even we are in crisis we never turn our back on each other!
(pause)
I was listening to NFL running back Leonard Fournette the other day say something that hit me so hard I almost cried for joy........
He said,
“During Hurricane Katrina, his entire family slept together on the bridge.....
(slight pause)
.......grandmama was next to Grandaddy, and daddy was next to mama
.........and aunties and uncles were next to cousins!
(pause)
And I don't know about you but the reason this hit me so hard is because.......
..........this is what I come from!
(pause)
If you ain't willing to sleep next to me on a bridge in a storm........
........don't come trying to sit next to me in the sunshine!
And the reason this is significant is because.......
We cannot STAND UP.........until we STAND TOGETHER!
(pause and expound)
Look at this now......
The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah,
“When you act as midwives to the Hebrew women, and see them on the birthstool, if it is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, she shall live.”
According to the text,
The king of Egypt has now intensified the level of persecution to control the population....
This is his 3rd plan of the king.
.......and the most disgusting part to his plan is that he is plotting to kill all of the male children while they are actually being born.
(pause)
watch this......
.......he could not stop them from becoming pregnant,.... so he decides to do this.
(slight pause)
....and he seeks the support of those who are responsible for giving birth.
Freedom can I tell you something....
“Don't ever help someone else kill what God is causing to become pregnant!”
(pause)
Accprding to the text......
The king goes and speaks to these two practitioners who are over seeing a medical facility under the balcony of heaven that is responsible for birthing the next generation of Israel......
(pause)
And so he walks up to Shiprah.......and Puah
..........and throws his agenda into the “delivery room” as if it belongs there.
(pause)
This is an incredible moment for these two women.......
.......because if they don't understand their purpose correctly in Gods plan
..........not only are they switching teams, but there will be no Moses!
(pause)
And Freedom,
If we don't stand together in our purpose there are some Moses that will go unborn.....
(pause)
And just like in the text today.....
.........there are some pharaohs who are saying,
“Choose between my plan, and Gods plan”
(pause)
And the reason this king wants to come against Israel is because he believes that the “Minority “ will become the “Majority” and conquer Egypt........
and so he commands them by saying,
“When you act as a midwife to the Hebrew woman.............
........and you see her on the birth stool, if it's a boy kill him.”
In this timeframe of delivering babies the women would squat on two stones to give birth.
.........and the midwife was the woman who supported the womb, to help give birth.
(pause)
Pharoah says,
I want you to do the opposite of what you normally do in the delivery room....
Freedom...
.......never allow unrighteousness action or suggestion influence you to move backwards in your purpose
(pause)
look at this now....
But the midwives feared God; they did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but they let the boys live.
These two sisters thought about what the king said.......
....and they responded with civil disobedience in defense of a moral imperative.
(pause)
The text says,
“ but the midwives feared God “
(pause)
And in my spiritual imagination I see..
.....them saying,
“ there's no way we can help him destroy what God is building!”
( slight pause)
I see them saying,
“ i'm not doing that!”
(slight pause)
I see them saying,
“ we don't assist in destruction, especially in the delivery room”
(pause)
Freedom....
......... there's too much at stake to contaminate the birthing room with evil intentions.
(pause)
and....
........ there are some people depending on us to help them give birth to something “God placed”in their life.
(pause)
These two midwives are walking away from the pharoah with the mindset that says.......
“ we will not allow him to terrorize us all the way out of our purpose!”
(pause)
And......
........ whenever someone or something tries to get you to cancel what God wants to create,
...... you should do what these midwives did,
...... and come up with a better plan!
(pause)
These sisters decided,
.... instead of destroying,
..... we're going to deliver
and....
...... instead of suspending,
..... we're going to sustain
(pause)
I hear.....
Shiprah, and Puah......saying,
“ .......let's get ready to pull this next generation out!”
(pause)
Freedom.....
I see these midwives standing up for something together that God is pleased with!
(pause)
And when the king comes back to evaluate the outcome of the plan.....he asks them,
“What happened?”
(pause)
And they responded....
“ they give birth to easily!
And what I really hate them saying in my spiritual imagination is.....
“King, as hard as you're trying to find a way to stop this......
....... what you don't realize is that God is pulling them out!”
(pause and expound)
And I need somebody that's listening to me to understand that......
........God is “Pulling you out of some traps that the devil has set for your life....
.........because there are some believers in Christ that refuse to switch teams!”
(pause)
I wonder if there's some people listening to me who starting to realize:
God is depending on me to help pull somebody out
God is counting on me to preserve over here and promote over there
(pause)
look at verse 22 Freedom....
Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, “Every boy that is born to the Hebrews you shall throw into the Nile, but you shall let every girl live.”
So what we see is that when the last plan failed.......pharoah tried again......
(pause)
The Bible says that......
...... pharaoh commanded the people to kill all the male children of the Hebrews.
He couldn't stop them in the birthing room so now he's going to their house and into the community.
and he says....
....... The way you're going to kill them is by
..... throwing them into the river!
(pause)
Now watch the text in the next chapter...
Now a man from the house of Levi went and married a Levite woman.
The woman conceived and bore a son; and when she saw that he was a fine baby, she hid him three months.
According to the text.......
...... Moses is born
(slight pause)
Moses is the second son and the third child of Aram and Jochebed
Moses is seventh in the line of Abraham
Moses is a handsome healthy beautiful baby boy
(pause)
and the Bible says his mother hid him for three months.....
(pause)
Freedom......
....... sometimes bold risk taking is required because of who and what we have to pull out
(slight pause)
Watch this now....
.....because this mother is protecting her son.
......... and I don't even believe that she knows just yet that Moses is the deliverer of Israel.
(pause)
Freedom........
........ you don't always know who you're pulling out
........ sometimes you have no idea who you are protecting
But......
......... do it anyway!
(pause)
Because.........
..... on the other end of your sacrifice is a,
Doctor with the same wisdom that God put in George Washington Carver.
lawyer with the same legal tenacity God placed in Thurgood Marshall
Rosa Parks that sparks the moral conscious of a nation
(pause)
The only thing I'm trying to get you to see is.....
........ our Moses is worth bold risk taking!
There's a song that says,
“ don't you ever give up.......
.... we are proof of what holding on can do”
(pause)
And......
........... this verse number two is what holding on looks like!
(pause)
look at this now....
When she could hide him no longer she got a papyrus basket for him, and plastered it with bitumen and pitch; she put the child in it and placed it among the reeds on the bank of the river.
The conjunction “and” should really say “but......”
..... according to the Hebrew meaning and phrasing of this verse.....
And so....
....... when she could not hold him back from being exposed and growing she had to trust God with what happens next in his life.
(pause)
And.....
...... In this process of walking in our purpose with God.
.... There comes a time where if we are truly going to experience Freedom,
....... we have to be willing to trust God on a level that suggests,
“ I am placing my Moses in a God place!”
(pause)
Notice,
Pharoah says,
Throw all of the male children in the river to be killed...
And.....
Moses mother....... placed Moses in the same river so that he can actually live!
(pause)
And that's because you can be in the same place that was meant to destroy you.....
......but faith says
Gods plan is bigger!
(Pause)
and this is why I called this extraordinary faith.....
......because The next verse four says,
His sister stood at a distance, to see what would happen to him.
Freedom......
The mother tells Moses his older sister Miriam to be a look out and see what's going to happen to him next...
But she doesn't even come and stay to let him go off floating into this river.....
(pause)
Now regardless of why....
........ she has a faith that says,
“ let's just see what happens!”
(pause and expound)
And what this teaches us is that......
.......Faith in God is what controls our Freedom
(Pause)
And that's why.....
......... some of you are not seeing the outcomes that you have been promised
..... you refuse to trust God on a level that says,
“ let's just see what happens!”
(pause and expound)
I see this Woman saying,
…….. after all of this
,….. I know I can trust God to pull me out!
(pause and expound)
Now watch Miriam…….
patiently waiting…..
purposely sitting……
Perfect.
(pause)
Freedom……I wonder if you’re ready!
because what I hear God saying is,
“ I don’t need you to be Moses just yet……
(slight pause)
….right now I need you to be Miriam
(longer pause)
Because….…….
…..I need somebody that I can trust to be on watch!
…... I need some Miriam’s who can,
“Pull Moses Out!”
(pause and expound)
And I hear God saying,
“ I don’t need you watching with eyes like Pharoah!”
because Pharoah is watching so that he can destroy…..
because Pharoah is watching so that he can destroy…….he is critical when he looks….he is critical when he looks
because Pharoah is watching so that he can destroy….
…he is critical with his eyes
(slight pause)
But I need a Miriam who will be my lookout for a very different reason!
I need you to see what could happen
I need you to watch with hope in your eyes
(pause and expound)
And according to the text…
Miriam did not move!
She watched over that river like a hawk
(pause)
And here’s what blew my mind y’all….
Miriam is no more than seven years old when Moses is a baby
that means she would be a second grader in today’s time
(pause)
But what I need for you to see is her level of:
Bravery
Compassion
(pause)
We sit around and make excuses as to why we cannot stand in position to pull someone out…………
….while a second grader is sitting in the bushes saying to herself
“Not on my watch…..Pharoah!”
“that’s my little brother!”
(pause and expound)
And now she has a testimony that sounds like DJ Kaled that says…
“When nobody else believed in me…..…God DID!”
(pause and expound)
And according to verse 5….
The daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her attendants walked beside the river. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her maid to bring it.
It ain’t Pharoah that shows up…….…..
but his daughter walks down to the river
(pause)
Now Freedom I need you to see the audacity of Moses’s mother…
(slight pause)
Because….…
she does not release the sun she is protecting in a place for away from the palace of Pharoah….
But instead……
She trusts God enough to walk right over to pharaohs backyard
……and say,
“God I trust you enough to……Pull us out of this one!”
(slight pause)
Miriam…...put him where they can find him!
(pause and expound)
See you ain’t Free…….
until your Faith says,
“I fear God more than I fear anybody else!”
When you can walk off and see what happens!
When you can tell a 2nd grader to come get me when God proves who God is
(pause)
I’m looking for some Miriam’s….
but I’m also searching for some people with this kind of faith that says,
Pharoah I’m willing to come in your backyard if that’s where my Faith leads me!
(pause)
And here what happens when Faith leads us…..
because verse 5 says…
When Pharaoh’s daughter opens this homemade boat with Moses inside…
…..he starts crying!
(pause)
And here it is Freedom……
because in my spiritual imagination……
I hear Moses’s voice through the cries
I hear our Moses voice through the cries
and what I hear him saying is……
“Pull me OUT!”
(pause and expound)
Freedom, can you hear him?
(slight pause)
and if we don’t do it….…..
Who else will?
ain’t nobody else standing here
an ain’t nobody else got the courage
ain’t nobody else got the authority
(pause)
“Pull him out!”
Our next generation
Our sons and our daughters
Our Grandchildren and our Great Grandchildren
(pause)
What are we pulling them out of Pastor?
(slight pause)
Whatever is crazy enough to run up on them…..
(pause)
Whatever is evil enough to put together a plan against them…..
(pause)
I don’t have to tell you word for word what the trap is…….……
because many of us have the SCARS still in our DNA to remind us…….
that we have no choice but to,
Stand Up……
….and Stand Together…..
for Righteousness sake!
for Freedom!
(slight pause)
“Our Moses is crying!”
“PULL……..Me………OUT!”
(pause and expound)
Here it is Freedom…..
On verse 10 the text says…..
“ she named him Moses because she said I pulled him out of the water!”
(pause)
And so Freedom……
Moses doesn’t even have his name, until he gets “PULLED Out!”
(pause)
And…..
God told me to tell you that,
…. this next generation won’t really know who they are completely until we
“pull them out!”
………..COMPLETED…………..
